HENRY EVALUARDJUK (EVALOARDJUK; EVALUAKJUAK; EVALUARJUK; EVALURARJUK; IVALUARDJUK; EEVALOOKJUK) Born: 1923 Male E5-846
Place of Birth: Igloolik
Resides: Iqaluit; also lived in Igloolik, Pond Inlet
Sculpture, Drawings, Paintings
" From Igloolik we moved to Pond Inlet. It was there that I started to carve.
A white man there said that my uncle and one other man were the only people
who carved in this settlement. I told him I knew I could carve too if I
tried...I have been carving since then.
In 1959 I came to Iqaluit from Pond Inlet. I helped to get the Co-op started
and remained working there for three years. When I was working for the
government at the Arts & Crafts [Centre], I was introduced to painting. When
I was a boy I used to draw many pictures. My father got pencils for me from
the white men. I enjoy painting."
Henry Evaluardjuk, 1975. Henry Evaluardjuk was born in 1923 in Igloolik. He had travelled to and lived in Arctic Bay, pond Inlet, Markham Bay, Lake Harbour and Cape Dorset - virtually the length and breadth of Baffin Island, Nunavut. In 1959 Henry has settled down with his family in Iqaluit (meaning fish in Inuktitut; formerly Frobisher Bay), in one of the most famous carving communities in Lower Baffin Island. Henry is known primarily for his sculpture but his talent is equally evident in his drawings and paintings. Henry's style is realism. Like many other Inuit artists, he mostly draws his inspiration from the Arctic wildlife. His favourite subject matter are polar bears, often in unusual or heroic poses, or with exaggerated proportions. Evaluardjuk's ability to bring out the animal essence, rather than seek out the humanness of the animals, is what make his sculpture distinctive. Evaluardjuk is also one of the few Inuit artists to engage in depicting the human face. His exquisite portraits of ordinary people from his community, with their delicate rendering of detail and expressionism, have becom a well-sought item among fine art collectors.
