About the Kitikmeot Region & Gjoa Haven serpentine   |    Nunavut Map | Return

This region (pronounced "kitik mee ot") is on the northern edge of the Canadian mainland bordering the Arctic Ocean.  Somerset Island is included in the regions geography.

Gjoa Haven, Spence Bay [Taloyoak] , Pelly Bay & Cambridge Bay are the major communities in this area. The entire region is part of the new territory of Nunavut, a self-governing Inuit region in northern Canada.

Of particular note is the distinctive serpentine stone found in the Gjoa Haven area.  The serpentine from Gjoa Haven has significant white inclusions in otherwise very dark green or black colored stone.

Such well known artists as Ralph Porter and  Uriash Pukiknak are from Gjoa Haven.
