Marine Mammals
by Mike Vlessides
Traditionally, few cultures in the world were more dependent on the
creatures of the sea than the Inuit.
Indeed, in a land where resources were often scarce, the fertile
waters of Nunavut and its vast populations of marine mammals provided the raw materials
that helped Inuit society thrive in one of the world's harshest climates. Even today, as
massive material changes continue to reshape Inuit society, the people of Nunavut use
marine mammals as important sources of food, clothing, and increasingly, revenue.
