The stone found in Baffin Island
is metamorphic rock - has a composition similar to jade and is known as Steatite or
Serpentine. It's varying colour (ranging from light to dark green, to brown and black) is
derived from the veining and inclusion of minerals such as iron and quartzite.
The artists of southern Baffin Island tend to work in a highly creative and
representational style. Carvings are often elegant and detailed with smooth and
flowing curves. Animals are a favourite subject matter and are naturally and
beautifully rendered. Dancing figures - Bears, Drum Dancers and Walruses are also very
popular subject matter. Spirit and transformation pieces draw upon Inuit legends for their
inspiration. ALSO SEE About Baffin Island |
