OSUITOK IPEELEE (OSHOOWEETOOK 'B'; AIPELLIE; OSHAWEETUK; IPELLIE;
OSOETUK; OSHEWETOK)
Born: October 23, 1923 Male E7-1154
Resides: Cape Dorset
Sculpture, Prints, Printmaking
Osuitok was born and raised near the settlement of Cape Dorset. He
married his wife Nipisha in 1946 and moved his growing family into Cape Dorset
permanently in the mid 1950s. When James Houston went to Cape Dorset in 1951
Osuitok was already well known as an ivory carver and his work was greatly
admired by other Inuit. His earliest carvings were ivory miniatures of kayaks
and fox traps. He later made beautiful etched walrus tusks depicting the old
ways of hunting. His carving of Queen Elizabeth was presented to Her Royal
Highness when she toured the north in the 1960s.
Osuitok was instrumental in the introduction of print-making in Cape
Dorset, and although he rarely makes prints himself, his first print "Four
Muskoxen" from the 1959 Graphics collection is a rare collector's item. A
sensitive artist, Osuitok is a man who loves the language of his people and
takes pride in speaking it well. His interest in the history of the Inuit and
their traditonal culture is reflected in his carivngs.
-based on information compiled by D. Trafford.
ABoriginArt Galleries recently learned from Dorset Fine Arts
[John Westren] that Osuitok was actually born as Osuitok Ohotuq.
He later [Presumambly when his father died] changed his name to
Osuitok Ipeelie. Ohotok was Osuitok's father. Osuitok's brother was
Enooky Ohotok who retained his father's name while Osuitok did not.
