LUKASSIE TUKALAK (TOOK; LUKASI; TOOKALOOK; TUKALA; TUKALUK; TOOKALAK;
LUCASSIE)
Born: 1917 Male E9-1447
Resides: Puvirnituq
Prints, Sculpture
Lukassie Tukalak or "Took", as he is often called, was born south of
Puvirnituq in 1917. He was raised to live off the land by his parents, Tukala
and Irqumiaralu. Lukassie had four siblings: two sisters, and two brothers -
one of whom is an established carver and graphic artist, Isah Ajagutaina
Tukala. His confidence as an artist and his hard work as a community leader
may be attributed, in part, to the fact that he is a member of one of the most
influential families in the region. He is married to Alice Qijuaqu and they
have nine children. One of his sons, Tamusi Qumalu (or Tamusi "Took"), is
also a carver. Lukassie is the uncle of Qumaluk Tukalak, Lucy Amarualik and
Adam Tukala.
A confirmed long-term supporter of the cooperative system, Lukassie was
an original member of the Povungnituk Sculptors Society, which preceded the
establishment of the current cooperative. He is also in charge of purchasing
carvings, and manages the tourist program for Puvirnituq. In 1978 Lukassie
was chosen to represent his community at the Printmakers Conference held in
Ottawa.
Although he still does the occasional stone carving, Lukassie has
concentrated on the production of prints since 1976. Hunting and camping
activities are recurrent themes in both media. The prints are charming in
their liveliness and attention to detail, and also in the way that the human
subjects engage the viewer with their wide-eyed gazes. Lukassie's figurative
carvings often portray a single hunter engaged in an arduous activity.
