MARK TUNGILIK (TONGELIK; TONGIKIK; TUNGALIK; MARC; TANGALIK) Born: 1913 Male E3-320
Place of Birth: Netjilik Ilani
Died: September 22, 1986
Resided: Repulse Bay; also lived in Pelly Bay, Wager Bay and Igloolik
Sculpture
"He began carving when he was a teenager and his first works were human
figures in stone, usually holding ivory harpoons. Dogteams became a specialty
and Tungilik remembers carving these completely from ivory, including the
harnesses. This was a difficult task, however, and visual records of his work
show that he was using sinew and other natural substances in his complex
scenes of the 1950s."
