"UNIDENTIFIED"

Many older pieces are "unidentified" as to the artist.

These older sculptures were often carved for self display or to give as gifts.

In the early stages of the development of Inuit Art signatures were often not applied to the piece itself. Eventually the government of Canada assigned each artist a number that became known as an "E" number. The "E" numbers were usually enscribed somewhere on the work. Later artists simply signed their name in either Inuktituk (their syllabic" language) or later in english.

Today's modern Inuit Art is almost always signed.
