Description
Artist Statement * I made this house to look like a white man’s house, but the people are painting it. They’re not real people, they must be spirits. You can see their flippers. I used to see windows glow in the past, from a lantern inside, so I made these yellow. We made the print together here in the shop. I chose the colours, drawing on the stone, then we inked the stone and proofed until I liked the colour. We were only going to go ahead with the colours I liked. I find that I like layers of colours, and usually avoid large areas of any one colour. I made the straight lines in the house with a ruler, but the rest is freehand. The painters are reminiscent of sea-creatures, in spite of the fact that the house is on land. The house may show people what many of our houses are now like in the north. People shouldn’t think that we are up here without warm houses. I’m quite satisfied with how the print turned out*
