Joe Ekidlak was born in 1952 and still works and lives in Sanikiluaq the main settlement on the Belcher Island group that lies off of the coast of Nunavik or Arctic Quebec. The area is known for its smooth greyish limestone which is only found in this remote region. Inclusions of fossil plant remains gives this stone an interesting structure and vibrancy not found anywhere else. Out of this unusual material Joe creates a huge variety of emotionally felt depictions of his peoples past and mythology. The main subjects are transformations within the human and animal world. They are not only examples of Bird / Human / Bear / Sea Creature / Shaman spirit figures ….. they shine and sparkle with emotion and one has to see and touch them to fully appreciate his artistic magic. They are all so tactile which is a big part of what makes his work truly one of a kind !
