Description: We have come across exciting new pieces from a collector who put together his fabulous Inuit collection in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Having immigrated from Germany to British Columbia in 1952, he rapidly gained an appreciation and passion for the rich cultural heritage of Canada. In British Columbia he made personal connections with many inspiring Northwest Coast Native artists such as Ellen Neel and Rufus Moody and developed a strong interest in the retelling of their mythology through art and carving. But he was also intrigued by the Inuit art – the keenness of their observation of their lifestyles and the hunt which the Inuit carvers simply and beautifully retold through their tools and soapstone. He acquired his pieces from La Federation des Cooperatives du Nouveau-Quebec as well as La Societe Cooperative de Povungnitik. He had the opportunity to personally visit the Federation des Cooperatives du Nouveau-Quebec in the early 1970’s where he acquired many of his favorite pieces. He kept many of the pieces for himself but also resold many carvings as a means of financing his collection. As this was a time long before the internet, photocopiers and digital cameras he spent countless hours sketching each piece with carbon copies to send to interested buyers, predominantly in Germany. He passed away in 1990 and the family, in the interest of downsizing , has finally decided it is time to find a new home for this treasured collection.
