Beschreibung: Andrew Qappik is a widely celebrated printmaker and graphic artist from Nunataq, NU who now resides in Pangnirtung, NU. Pangnirtung’s printmaking workship was established in 1973 and by the age of 14 Qappik had 5 prints in the Pangnirtung Print Collection [1]. In his prints Qappik fuses traditional themes and contemporary Inuit realities with a majority of his works depicting his experiences on the land. In his print In As I See AS I SEE (1998) the viewer’s eye is put at ice-level allowing a glimpse into both the human and animal world as a hunter attempts to catch a seal. The print has a playful quality with both animals shown curiously investigating the breathing hole. The similarity of the hunter and the seal’s face shapes as well the action of peering directly at each other indicates symmetry between the animal and hunter as well as adding an element of humour [2]. Qappik’s black-and-white Self-Portrait in Printshop (2003) is not just one of his few non-colour prints but also his only self-portrait. Qappik’s print depicts the modernity of Inuit artists today with classic prints hanging on the wall juxtaposing his t-shirt and sweatpants. Qappik represents Inuit subject matter in its contemporary and traditional forms, preserving Inuit imagery as tied to land and spirituality while allowing Inuit artists to be modern and not of the past. Qappik was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2017 for his contribution to the design of the Nunavut coat of arms as well as the creation of the Government of Nunvavut and the Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated logos. In 2018 Qappik was commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint to design Nunavut’s 20th anniversary gold coin. Qappik has exhibited his work around the world and has pieces in the public collection of many institutions such as the Canadian Museum of History, Gatineau, QC. He had many prints published by the Pangnirtung Print Shop and has appeared in multiple publications including numerous times in Inuit Art Quarterly.
