Descripción: Artist statement * These hunters were drawn to show the times of great success in the hunt. They used only harpoons, as this was before we had rifles. I used to try with a harpoon, but I couldn't get a seal. I put the whale in to show the huge whales that would visit the floe edge. The hunters are not trying for whale, and the whale pays no attention to them. I put them together as both are part of the floe edge. * Print Shop statement * When we draw, we follow our minds, sometimes revealing things from the past, sometimes being surprised ourselves to draw things we have never seen. Karpik got a lot of pleasure from drawing. As he nearing the end of his life, he said the drawings tired him, it was getting harder and harder to finish them the way he wanted. I saw his two final drawings, done before he was sent south to the hospital. For so many years it was drawings and sculpture in stone, bone and ivory that kept him going. One often struggles for money to buy food and goods, but Karpik earned a good living from his art *
